Hardness of Set Cover with Intersection 1

چکیده
We consider a restricted version of the general Set Covering problem in which each set in the given set system intersects with any other set in at most 1 element. We show that the Set Covering problem with intersection 1 cannot be approximated within a o(log n) factor in random polynomial time unless N P ZT IM E(n O(log log n)). We also observe that the main challenge in derandomizing this reduction lies in nd a hitting set for large volume combinatorial rectangles satisfying certain intersection properties. These properties are not satissed by current methods of hitting set construction. An example of a Set Covering problem with the intersection 1 property is the problem of covering a given set of points in two or higher dimensions using straight lines; any two straight lines intersect in at most one point. The best approximation algorithm currently known for this problem has an approximation factor of (log n), and beating this bound seems hard. We observe that this problem is Max-SNP-Hard.

Domination in Geometric Intersection Graphs
For intersection graphs of disks and other fat objects, polynomial-time approximation schemes are known for the independent set and vertex cover problems, but the existing techniques were not able to deal with the dominating set problem except in the special case of unit-size objects. We present approximation algorithms and inapproximability results that shed new light on the approximability of...

1.2 Hardness of k-median Theorem 1. It is hard to approximate k-median within 1+ 2 e1/c for any c < 1. This theorem is equivalent to the 1− 1/e− hardness shown in [2] and follows from a standard reduction from set cover. The main idea is to take an approximation algorithm for k-median, and use it to obtain a partial set cover. Then repeat this process, again partially covering the remaining ite...
متن کاملPTAS for Weighted Set Cover on Unit Squares
We study the planar version of Minimum-Weight Set Cover, where one has to cover a given set of points with a minimum-weight subset of a given set of planar objects. For the unit-weight case, one PTAS (on disks) is known. For arbitrary weights however, the problem appears much harder, and in particular no PTASs are known. We present the first PTAS for Weighted Geometric Set Cover on planar objec...
متن کاملApproximation hardness of optimization problems in intersection graphs of d-dimensional boxes
The Maximum Independent Set problem in d-box graphs, i.e., in the intersection graphs of axis-parallel rectangles in Rd, is a challenge open problem. For any fixed d ≥ 2 the problem is NP-hard and no approximation algorithm with ratio o(logd−1 n) is known. In some restricted cases, e.g., for d-boxes with bounded aspect ratio, a PTAS exists [17]. In this paper we prove APX-hardness (and hence no...
متن کاملOn the Security of O-PSI a Delegated Private Set Intersection on Outsourced Datasets (Extended Version)
In recent years, determining the common information privately and efficiently between two mutually mistrusting parties have become an important issue in social networks. Many Private set intersection (PSI) protocols have been introduced to address this issue. By applying these protocols, two parties can compute the intersection between their sets without disclosing any information about compone...
